PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water in large amounts, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 43░C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 43░C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Confusion, cough, dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, sore throat, unconsciousness, weakness. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • May cause toxic effects within 20-30 minutes after skin contact. MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness, serious skin burns, pain.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Safety shower/eye-wash fountain in the immediate work area.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention (see Notes).
  • EYES
  • Irritation, pain, severe deep burns.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting (further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking liquid in covered containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from strong oxidants, strong bases, strong acids. Dry. Keep in a well-ventilated room.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS OR YELLOWISH HYGROSCOPIC LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR. TURNS DARK ON EXPOSURE TO AIR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing strong acids and bases , causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks many metals.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV: 5 ppm; 22 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992).

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin, and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20░C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system. Exposure may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure. The substance may have effects on the kidneys and liver. Repeated exposure may cause injury of the liver and kidneys.

    Relative vapour density (air = 1): 3.7
    Flash point: 43-82░C
    Auto-ignition temperature: About 559░C
Explosive limits, vol% in air: 1.1-?
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.94-1.96
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment.
    NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Continue decontamination by wiping skin with solution of polyethylene glycol (1 part of polyetylene glycol and 2 parts of water). Can be absorbed through the skin also from diluted solutions. Bacillol, Tekresol, Trikresol are trade names.
